Virginia Lee Burton

Beloved Illustrator and Visionary

Virginia Lee Burton (1909–1968), affectionately known as “Jinnee,” was one of the most influential illustrators of the 20th century. Her beloved classic Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (1938) remains a favorite among generations of readers and was named one of the National Education Association’s Top 100 Books for Children. Winner of the 1943 Caldecott Medal for The Little House and a 1948 Honor for The Song of Robin Hood, Burton also founded the acclaimed Folly Cove Designers in Gloucester, Massachusetts — a community of artists whose work achieved international recognition for its artistry and craftsmanship.
